Sorry to hear about this man. Hope you can get some resolution to this, especially for the cost of these vehicles. Keep spreading the word of mouth locally and via the internet. Eventually Toyota with fix the problem, similar to the Tacoma's, or they may end up paying out top $ to consumers.
I am glad I went with my '06 F150 over the '06 Tundra and '07 Tundra now after this report, even though there are no reports of the '07+ model having rust issues yet. The '06 Tundra was the #3 truck on my 1/2 ton list when purchasing, and the '07 Tundra was further down the list due to my dislike of the style and the extremely cheap interior. Have owned six Ford trucks, never an extreme rust issue with any frames. Sure a quarter panel or tailgate here and there on the older models (1981 F150 & 1985 Ranger), but no signs of rust on any of the '99 and up models I've had.
I own a 2001 Tundra SR5 4WD X CAB, vehicle has 36,800 miles on it and is always garaged. I live in Maryland so the vehicle does see an occassional snow, sleet condition. Only after the first year I noticed rust and not only the frame, but under the hood around engine, hose clamps and the worst is the steering column. For the past 8 years I have purchased over a case of Rust - Oleum to spray on the frame, I believed I have slowed the rust issue, but this is BS.
I have just found out about the NHSTA rust issue and called Toyota Customer Experience. Told them of my concerns with my steering column and they did not want to hear it, SAYING IT WAS A FRAME ISSUE ONLY. They told me to set up an appointment with the Stealership. whom knew nothing about the Tundra rust problem only the Tacoma's rust issues.
It is sad that once you make the purchase they do not want to hear or see you again until you are ready to buy again! But guess what no more Toyotas ever again for me ......never seen anything like this, even after owing a Datsun 200SX in the 70's / 80's when Japanese cars were notorious for rust!
