I got my tekonsha "prodigy" brake controller & wiring harness from etrailers.com for our 4 runner. The 4 runner is going to be replaced with a tundra very soon and luckily the same wiring harness work for both. You could tow your camp trailer without the w.d. hitch, but it will tow much better with the hitch. When we bought the trailer...it was towed with my father in laws big diesel 2500 dodge without the w.d. hitch and in reality it handled worse than our 4 runner tows it with the w.d. hitch. I picked up my w.d hitch used off craigslist for $100...much cheaper than new.

I use the Tekonsha P3 controller in my Tundra to tow my 4000lb camper; once set up, works like a charm. I also use a WD hitch, as that is the way the camper was set up to be towed by my 4runner. The camper tows nicely and the truck hardly knows its there. For more info on a WD hitch, you could check out a shop that sells / installs hitches to see what they say. A place like Camping World. When in doubt, always check with a pro!

thanks for the info. I bought the prodigy brake controller from e-tailer and took my camper on its maiden voyage to Chimney Rock NC. the controller works great! I also installed Firestone Ride-Rite air helper springs on my Tundra that i bought from towshop.com for only $259.00! This is a very easy upgrade to install and makes the ride while towing sooo much better. 25 PSI in the springs seems to be sufficient and when I unhitch the camper, I just reduce the pressure to 5 PSI and I have the original suspension back. This is a great product. I recommend it to anyone that hauls anything.

you shouldnt need helper bags, but they will help to maintain ride height and stock ride while towing the trailer, ive been looking into a set because i always have a toy in the box of my truck and i would like to maintain the stock ride, look and height
