2007 TUNDRA 5.7....Since new the engine at times sounds just like a engine running out of oil......that sound like the lifters are not pumped up with oil, but it comes out the bottom of the engine.....I have actually stopped at a red light and cut the truck off and checked the oil......FULL.....It rattles mostly when i come to a stop.......has a cold start up knock every morning .....Rear end whines when it warms up at 65 mph.......This is my 11th toyota and I guess it is my turn for a LEMON.......This engine problem appears to be a commom problem on other forums......Have taken it in 4 times to 2 different dealers and they all read from the same script.....normal operation.......wow......Shame on me for wanting a $30000 pick up that does not rattle or whine......Love the basic truck except the 5.7 and rear end.....Is there a engine recall in our near future??????Swaping certified letters between dealer and corporate at this time.......ALL I WANT IS A WHAT I AM PAYING FOR TO BE RIGHT........trucksaledave
I have a 2008 SR5 and i have exprienced the same engine noise upon start up and low speed operation. I only have 800 miles on the truck. I thougth maybe it was break-in or something. It almost sounds like a semi-quiet diesel engine sometimes. Keep us updated. I will be in touch with service department soon. Thanks.
My 5.7 makes so many strange noises.....ticking...rattling....knocking and about 5k miles ago you could hear the rattling going down the road 40mph so it is getting louder.....Me and my family have bought 9 toyota from the dealer and they will not call me back......Corporate Toyota says they can not do any thing til a dealer opens a repair order......trucksaledave
"Clatter" or Diesel sound is a combo of the piston sound (NOT SLAP), the timing chains (Yes plural chainS) and the valves. The "Problem" is sound deadening not the engine. as for the rear end whine that is a new one.. You are the first person I hear of with this issue. the Rear end is a definate no go in my book. I have a whistle but that is the throtle body.
A service manager told me ...off the record... that some dealers were putting a heavier weight oil with good success for the noise......BUT fuel mileage dropped 2 to 3 mpg......WOW....................................Just found out today that the trans is a sealed unit only to be serviced by the dealer.......I must not have checked this Tundra out before I bought it.......crazy oil filter location.....no way to change trans fluid........If the values of these were not dropping so fast I would trade......BOTTOM LINE...Toyota still bulids a good product......I just did not buy it........trucksaledave
Toyota isn't the only one producing sealed transmissions - GM and Ford have been doing it for years. It sounds like a bad thing, but that's what people said about 100k mile spark plugs.
The service manager at the dealership told me one day during one of my many visits that the new Toyota Flagship Pick-up was not designed for the...." do-it-yourselfer".....was he ever right.......By making it so hard to change oil and not being able to drop your trans fliud.....a used Tundra might not be a good purchase in the future......If you have Toyota perform all the services by the maintenance book this model will be expensive to own......trucksaledave
I have had 3 problems, 1 alternator screaming constantly and quit working, 2 tensioner pulley same problem, 3 rear end made a clanking noise so i took it in and found out the pin thjat holds the spider gears in place broke in half. i am sad about my beloved truck, but i am still getting that damn supercharger and all the mods i can find.
2008 Tundra 5.7.. I'm having the same problem, each morning it makes a knocking noise. I've not owned a tundra before so I'm glad I came across this website so I can get info on how to get this fixed. I'm about to take this to the dealer do you have any info on the best way to proceed with this complaint? Any help will be appreciated. Cheers.
The engine knock is normal per Toyota. When it is cold it is BAD but I have had no problems so far. The noise is a combo of the Timing chain and the lifters clicking. Combine noises to produce "THE CLATTER OF DOOM".
If your truck was actually knocking the Check Engine light would be on.
Lots of luck......5 visits to 3 different dealers.....3 letters to CA/Toyota.......4 letters to my dealer.......3 certified letters.......I JUST MADE UP A DECAL TO GO ON THE BACK TAIL GATE THAT WILL GET EVERYONES ATTENTION.......MAYBE THIS WILL WORK.....TRUCKSALEDAVE
UP DATE......Nothing has been done to any of my new trucks problems.......I just don't drive it anymore....bought me another good truck....a chev......The value has drop so bad on all our Tundra's that I will have to pay it down just to trade it or maybe a recall on the 5.7 will take place and fix the problem.....Truck remines me of the 1983 chev vega that I owned with the alunimum engine.....after 20k miles it used oil and smoked.....maybe this is better.....When I do drive it the rear end whines bad at 65 plus miles per hour.....I am hard of hearing and I hear it......but Toyota does not want to hear it.......I have cost my dealer a lot of business as well as toyota.....I sell class 8 big rigs and come in contact with a many pickup owners.....every day.....IT is true sad story I tell.....
