2007 TUNDRA 5.7....Since new the engine at times sounds just like a engine running out of oil......that sound like the lifters are not pumped up with oil, but it comes out the bottom of the engine.....I have actually stopped at a red light and cut the truck off and checked the oil......FULL.....It rattles mostly when i come to a stop.......has a cold start up knock every morning .....Rear end whines when it warms up at 65 mph.......This is my 11th toyota and I guess it is my turn for a LEMON.......This engine problem appears to be a commom problem on other forums......Have taken it in 4 times to 2 different dealers and they all read from the same script.....normal operation.......wow......Shame on me for wanting a $30000 pick up that does not rattle or whine......Love the basic truck except the 5.7 and rear end.....Is there a engine recall in our near future??????Swaping certified letters between dealer and corporate at this time.......ALL I WANT IS A WHAT I AM PAYING FOR TO BE RIGHT........trucksaledave

It is piston slap plain and simple. It is impossible to say without testing and inspection what is causing the slap. It could be the cylinder(s) or piston(s) are out of tolerance. The piston or block could have a manufacturing defect. The piston or block could be poorly engineered. I am sure Toyota knows because the TMC regional rep admitted they no longer build the engines like they did in 07 & 08. Typically, a loose piston (if not broken) causes excessive wear of the piston and cylinder wall resulting in increased blowby. This in turn exacerbates the problem further because the loose piston cannot transfer heat to the cylinder adequately. What you have is an engine that, providing something doesn't actually break, wears out much earlier than it should. In a State where smog inspections are done it much more likely that the vehicle will fail the emissions test long before it should have, not to mention degraded performance. Toyota no doubt takes the stand that as long as it lasts at least 100,000 miles, the length of the extended warranty, then who cares. One of the reasons we all bought a Toyota was the reputation of their products for durability which equates to resale value. That expectation no longer applies to the 07 & 08 trucks not only because something is wrong with them but because TMC has not the honor to fully admit the problem and fix it. I am exploring the potential for legal action as this problem is becoming widely recognized in many forums across the Internet and it is time for Tundra owners to get some satisfaction from the manufacturer with respect to repairs and warranty coverage of this issue. The owners of the 3.0 liter T-100s and Tacomas with cast iron blocks and aluminum heads that all had bad head gaskets were ignored until they resorted to legal action. Toyota finally replaced all the head gaskets but unfortunately trucks with those engines are now almost worthless because everyone knows you can't keep a head gasket in one. Is that the future of our 07 & 08 5.7 liter Tundras?

It isn't piston slap. THAT we know for sure.

2 parts of the sound are valves and the timing chain. THAT we know for sure

If there is a third component, like ninjas doing the matress dance or something. THAT we don't know.

I went and tested an 09 and WOO HOO, it does it too. So if they make the engines different, they are making them the same in a diffrent same way that is diffrently samely..ent like. The TMC rep gave you an ID-10-t answer.

He probably followed it up by saying "Now we keep our Flux Capacitors charged"

dude that is some intense stuff and that exactly why i bought my tundra because i thought it would last me untill the day after forever and with the sound of toyota maybe trying to screw us over then that makes me very upset and maybe sell my beloved maximus and by a G500 i would really prefer to keep my truck but if toyota is having such prolblem with helping the people who let them keep driving around in limos and keep putting gas in there private jets then i expect them to FREAKING FIX MY DAMN TRUCK!!!! I mean damn, sorry about the language but when talking that tons of people have these new trucks and bought the big 5.7 because we needed it and it turns out that Americas top truck is POS. Im not saying that everbodys truck is crap because mine is certainly awesome but if they lose there value and not last much more than 120,000 miles then whats the point in sinking 30 to 40 grand into a truck if its not gonna keep its value and do its job.

Find a legal firm that specializes in class-actions because that is the only way us owners will get any satisfaction from TMC. They will never repair or replace the engines in hundreds of thousands of trucks without legal action. They are screwing their customers plain and simple.

Hey man a common mistake for some of those problems is a cracked flexplate. My 07 Tundra does that once in a while, i think what the problem is that toyota made such a powerful motor and totally forgot about there flexplate/flywheel and so it may crack due to all the torque. I would say since it should still be under warranty then take it back and say that i dont care if its normal operation and that you want it fixed or you want a new one, i know thats easier said then but its your hard eared money and its your truck and if they think that they are going to push you around becuase they think you dont know any better then they are WRONG! I say march in there with Chuck Norris and have round house kick them in the face and maybe they will be okay we will fix it or get you a new one. Now i know that the last part was a little out there but sometimes you must not let them tell you bullcrap, they are only trying to make you think that there is nothing wrong with your truck because warranty work is cheaper than regular work and dont want to have to pay there mechanics the same amount but not be able to charge the same. So i say take it to a few other places and if they say its something that must be fixed then let tell the toyota place to get it all figured out, if that doesnt work than i dont know what to tell you.

CHUCK NORRIS, NOW WE ARE TALKING.

IF you think it is broke, tell them and make them look into it. If they refuse, tell em that you have Chuck outside with a BB gun ready to take them DOWN!!!!!. I hear Prison and Hospital food is much better now.

UP DATE....I see every body is getting hot and bothered....Might as well cool down, cause TMC is not going to do a thing to help any of us. I just keep my Tundra looking good so every one ask me " How Do You Like It" and then come a mouth full. Chev should send me a commission check cause I have cost TMC about 8 pick up sales and the local dealer... Butler Toyota Co of Macon Georgia has lied to me twice and neither the owner Mr Butler or Mr Hollman has ever returned any of my calls or cert. letters.....That is just fine with me cause I am not mad anymore, just getting even and it is working.....One converted sale after another.........trucksaledave

If you are sending them to GM you should be (Insert nasty action) twice. I deal with ALL the vehicles out there and Toyota, even WITH the problems, is VASTLY greater in quality and functionality to ALL the other full size trucks.

This site is a community of Tundra owners who share experiances and rejoice with each others victories and help when someone has an issue. All I have heard from you is gripping. Sending people to buy a bigger pile of crap with a LOWER resale value is not a solution.

HERE is your solution: Call toyota Corp and bug the crap out of them until they do something. I had a n issue and called TMC on the phone and they resolved it FAST.

Agreed - you're on the wrong forum if you think it's going to convert us. Yes, we complain about certain things with Toyota but I'd never sell-out and cross over like that. If I felt that way about a truck I wouldn't drive it....won't you trade it in and see how many more complaints you'll have with one of the Big 3?

Now dont get mad at him he is just stopping the local dealer from screwing anybody else. He may be stopping everybody else from getting a nice truck but if thats what it takes to get them to change there ways then let him be.
