2007 TUNDRA 5.7....Since new the engine at times sounds just like a engine running out of oil......that sound like the lifters are not pumped up with oil, but it comes out the bottom of the engine.....I have actually stopped at a red light and cut the truck off and checked the oil......FULL.....It rattles mostly when i come to a stop.......has a cold start up knock every morning .....Rear end whines when it warms up at 65 mph.......This is my 11th toyota and I guess it is my turn for a LEMON.......This engine problem appears to be a commom problem on other forums......Have taken it in 4 times to 2 different dealers and they all read from the same script.....normal operation.......wow......Shame on me for wanting a $30000 pick up that does not rattle or whine......Love the basic truck except the 5.7 and rear end.....Is there a engine recall in our near future??????Swaping certified letters between dealer and corporate at this time.......ALL I WANT IS A WHAT I AM PAYING FOR TO BE RIGHT........trucksaledave

As I stated to you before, Please be a part of the solution. The adults are trying to solve problems, not create them. The only thing you have done in the recent past is run in, complain, then leave. Or run by, throw rotten fruit and keep running. If you want to park your truck, enjoy, but please stop coming in here and puking all over everyone. I understand you had a bad experiance, a VERY bad one from what you say. I want to know how to fix the issues and with rare exception, you and a few others, the problems get fixed. In the Blog world a person whi come in with the sole purpose of making problems is called a troll. I fell that you have been burned and now you are a troll. You wanted a fix at first but now you are so comsumed with vengence you only want to stir up problems.

I am extending the following solution. Take it, leave it, but this is the nuclear option, the end game move, and yes, I have done it and it works.

There are Lemon laws on the books, keep bringing it back to them to fix it and when they repeatedly fail, make them EAT it. You parked it, great low miles, Mileage is deducted off the buy back total. You ned to focus on the REAL problems and not petty ones. The transmission fell out, good. The engine sounds funny, bad. You need verifiable issues. Mine was the brake system in a Isuzu Pick Up. I brought it in 5 times in 6 months. Verifiable, documented, and they were unable to resolve the issue. If your drive shaft keeps shreading, good, pick it up and run out and run it till she pops again. Dont abuse it but if driving down Muggah Ave. causes it to hapen then drive down that road. I had the nastiest noise at 2000 miles. I would bring to dealer over and over again, finally they gave me a "When it happens and you can get here fast come by and we will drop everything and look at it" It did, I did, and they found the issue, loose wire harness. Fixed.


The real problem with you parking that truck is that it is one more number not on Yodas books, you are contributing to the problem if you give up and sit there and gripe all day. Put on your big boy pants and be a man, bring the truck back down to the dealer and get it documented. Then keep doing it till SOMEONE listens or you have enough data to sue for a refund under the lemon laws.

JB made a very good point. Get it all documented by continuing to go to the dealership and file under Lemon Law. Complaining here accomplishes nothing.

I have been to two dealerships and they both have wanted to make things right. That is all they can and should do for us. My 07 Tundra is headed to the shop for a new front differential with only 16k miles on it. How should I address and document my issue with the "diesel" sound the engine makes? I have brought it up at every oil change and they all say "normal." I notice that it is really bad when it is cold outside, but goes away once the engine is at normal operating temperature. One service advisor told me that it was the injectors. I just want the complaint documented. How can we find out if there are any service bulletins given to the dealerships on our trucks? Thanks for any advice.

The cold Diesel sound is normal. It is a combo of the timing chain, lifters, and the thin aluminum valve covers. A lot of sound gets through. Try running a fuel with Etanol in it, sounds like the engine is about to fall out. I don't run fuel with any ethanol in it in my baby now. Ask them to note that you asked about the sound, that way if it turns into more than a sound you are covered. That is about the extent of what you can do until it turns into an actual failure. I doubt the sound is a real future problem though, just my $.02. The tail gate and dash issues are pretty bad though.

SHELL OIL CO. makes a very fine oil called Rotela 5 w 40.... it is a fully syn. oil base that has did more good for my noise problem than any of the other oils. From start up to full warm up and after a hard run to work 65 miles the engine sounds ALMOST like a Toyota should. Fuel mileage is still the same around 17.8 to 19.5 with the 5w40. This is a oil for gas and diesel pickups all the way thur to the very large tractors. With the 5w rating you still get the cold start up flow that is very important....and the full temp protection also. Here in the south the 0w20 and 5w20 is just to thin a weight for day after day protection up 5000 miles. JMHO......trucksaledave

Rotela, I would have never thought to look at that. Makes since though, unless I am mistaken, that is an oil designed for tractors (Rigs) so it should be really good. What is the change interval on Rotela? 5000 or do you let it go longer?
I used to change my own oil, but don't have the time anymore. With the degree of difficulty with the new Tundra for oil changes, I have the dealership do it for me. Would using this oil void any warranty and how do you get the dealer's service department to use it? I think it is a great idea if it helps the engine and reduce the noise. I was supposed to have my front differential replaced tomorrow, but they informed me that the parts won't be in until April 1???? Does this seem strange to anyone?
Greg - First, the parts can often take days...but months? It sounds like you had something very out of the ordinary fail. I would suggest that you ask the dealer about "cannibalizing an in-stock unit." They'll probably say NO, and it may not have the right parts in the first place, but it's worth asking for.

As for the oil and warranty, the rule is that you can put whatever you want in your engine, just so long as it protects the motor it's OK. My experience in practice, however, is that if you do run a premium oil, you should still change on a cautious interval and keep excellent records...just in case.
Mark what problems are you having with shifting? With my truck when it shifts from 2 to 3 I lose power for a second or so, this happens to be right around 50-60mph.

that sounds like a sensor issue with the traction control system.

Thats what I was thinking, but when I turn the vsc off it still does it. I am not overly worried about it, just seeing if anyone experiences the same problem.
